Logo File Types Made Simple

You just got your shiny new logo — yay, congrats! 🎉
Then your designer sends you a folder full of files... and suddenly you’re staring at a confusing mess of .ai, .svg, .png, and “wait, what’s an .eps again?”

No worries! Let’s break it down so you actually know what each file is for, when to use it, and why they all matter

Breaking Down Your Logo File Folder

Your logo isn’t just one image — it comes in a bunch of different formats, and each one has its own purpose. It's all about using the right format in the right place, whether it's your website, a t-shirt, or a giant sign, having the right version of your logo ensures it always looks its best.

The Vector Files

You probably won’t use these files in your day-to-day (they usually open in design software like Adobe Illustrator), but they’re a must for anything professionally printed — like business cards, signages, or menus. Designers and printers love these files because they give them total flexibility to work with your logo in any size or format.

Even if you don’t need them right away, keep them safe! You’ll definitely need them down the line

  • .EPS — Perfect for sending to printers or other designers

  • .PDF — Can be print-ready and easy to open

Use for: print materials, packaging design, merchandise, large-scale designs, or when asked for “vector format.”

The Web Files

These are what you’ll use most often — for your website, social media graphics, emails, or anything digital. These files are saved at a specific size, so they look best when used just as they are. If you try to stretch them too big, they might look blurry, so keep them at their original size whenever you can!

  • .PNG — Transparent background (great for placing on photos or coloured backgrounds)

  • .JPG — White background, lightweight file (this is not transparent)

  • .SVG — A vector file for the web (best to use for scalable graphics like logos and icons)

Use these for: your website, Instagram graphics, Canva designs, email templates, presentations, email signatures
